The arguments in the "soft" classes on politics and organizational psychology were epic, sometimes bitter, and always exhilarating. I have no idea why they ever admitted me in the first place! During non-school hours, I mainly hung out with guys from across the Charles River at MIT. As the years passed after graduation, and I saw what Harvard stood for as an institution, I became thoroughly disenchanted. I think the last straw was when it was revealed that Harvard was discriminating against Asian students precisely because they were so well qualified. I had thought they let me in because I was capable, but how could that be true? Maybe they wanted a capitalist freak for diversity's sake. Hi. Would you say the richer the school (or the higher in status it is), the more it turned to a quasi-Left position? I studied "Economics" at a smaller university, and had American capitalists as well as other viewpoints. The American capitalists were morons.

As for "pure perseverance," that never worked for me. I am Autistic and my mind just will not do certain things. I am good at some things and bad at others. Great article Brad. I'm currently a Junior at the College and can certainly testify to a lot of what you wrote about. It's quite a shame that it has reached this point. I believe that many students, myself included, wish that Harvard would get out of the culture wars and focus on their jobs as educators. Their ideological warfare has gotten to the point where job opportunities are being actively withheld. Read your bit about Harvard. Not many schools are the same. GenZ has had some big effect on traditional institutions of higher learning. The main effect on Harvard may be 'woke benefactors' who will bitch and hold off funding for a year or so. Students love this contrarian stuff. Profs don't give a s-t. Harvard is only an example for elite professors, physicians who want to teach and some lawyers.
I studied history as an undergraduate not at an Ivy but at SUNY Albany graduation 1984-88. I loved every class I took and actually took more than needed for the major. My professors were all great teachers and scholars who resemble you and the professor described here (With the exception of one who was a Marxist but who STILL ran a classroom of free and open inquiry). I am sickened by what has become of higher education.

A few years ago my undergraduate Alma Mater Vanderbilt University (BA Philosophy 1967) reached out with an invitation to attend the demolition of the Carmichael Tower, its first high rise dormitory, finished my senior year, which was to be replaced by some even grander undergraduate digs. I was among the first residents, which, I supposed, accounted for the invitation. Having attended to the deterioration of a once fine university with dismay through the years, I replied that I would be pleased to attend...provided the Chancellor were chained to a chair on the roof and I got to push the button. I never heard back and watched it live on local TV. Oddly satisfying nonetheless.

We know what has transpired. You describe it well. What is little discussed is why we have arrived at this point in time. What is the source of this intellectual bankruptcy? Do we dare say that the Cartesian premise of the modern age, cogito ergo sum, is ultimately the point of turning to this new Dark Age? Are we truly creators of ourselves? I appreciate Harry Frankfort and Charles Taylor’s individual contributions to an understanding of human will and agency. They both speak of a second order of human agency where we have the capacity to make evaluative judgments. However, in order to make decisions like that we need to see that there is some transcendent universal truth that reflects back to us whether our thoughts are clear and sensible. Truth of this sort is not a commodity. It cannot be contained ideologically or programmatically. It must be embraced as a way to discover who we are and how we fit in a world far beyond our capacity to know completely.

To understand reality, you have to look inside. I stopped supporting my alma mater, the Colorado School of Mines, decades ago even though it was a wonderful institution when I went there and was instrumental in teaching me how to think. It is far from the left-wing cesspool the Ivy League has become, but is as enthralled with the environmental nonsense permeating the culture as just about everyone is these days. Except for very, very few outposts academia is a destroyer that not only should no longer be supported, but should be shunned and vilified for the pariah it is.
I once competed at an indoor track & field meet at the Colorado School of Mines around 1980.

What an engaging article! I'm a Harvard graduate - MBA 1978. I entered in 1976, fresh out of a five-year tour as an Air Force pilot, knowing nothing about business, finance, or accounting. I loved every minute of my HBS experience: I had to work 16 hours a day and felt like I was drinking from a firehose, but I learned a great deal by pure perseverance and learning in reverse. In my section of 80 students, I was one of exactly two avowed capitalists. The arguments in the "soft" classes on politics and organizational psychology were epic, sometimes bitter, and always exhilarating. I have no idea why they ever admitted me in the first place! During non-school hours, I mainly hung out with guys from across the Charles River at MIT. As the years passed after graduation, and I saw what Harvard stood for as an institution, I became thoroughly disenchanted. I think the last straw was when it was revealed that Harvard was discriminating against Asian students precisely because they were so well qualified. I had thought they let me in because I was capable, but how could that be true? Maybe they wanted a capitalist freak for diversity's sake. I told all my children that if they applied to Harvard, they'd be on their own and that I could not in good conscience pay their tuition. In my own small way, I boycotted Harvard long before Bill Ackman. My wife says I was ahead of the curve. ;)

Hi. Would you say the richer the school (or the higher in status it is), the more it turned to a quasi-Left position? I studied "Economics" at a smaller university, and had American capitalists as well as other viewpoints. The American capitalists were morons.
I would answer with a weak yes . Smaller, less wealthy schools may preserve traditional teaching to some degree. But I'm unsure how one would judge the objective truth on that question.

As for "pure perseverance," that never worked for me. I am Autistic and my mind just will not do certain things. I am good at some things and bad at others. Business is my weak spot and I do not seem to do well at it. Thank you for the precise response. I was just wondering about it. I think about those bygone days and wonder what it is we lost. Whatever it was there was a general consensus we had about the world. I thought the "top" universities must be better, in those days. I guess this was a bit overblown and idealistic on my part, however.

What a contrast between the genuinely nice coming of age story of a young promising academic making his way in contrast to the corrupt machinations and political reality of modern academia.
If Harvard wants to destroy its reputation and brand, I say let it go. It's been toxic for a good long while, along with a lot of other preeminent over-rated institutions.
Our ruling class is decadent and cynical. They don't believe in the deconstruction of America by Neo-Marxists as a social good. They believe they can use it to their advantage and to consolidate power. Just as the wealthy and privileged pseudo-Jacobins at Harvard and elsewhere lecture us about social justice and that immutable physical identity and perceived social trauma are the defining aspects of ones role in society, I would reply that there is no such thing as an organic revolution led by the most monied, most powerful people in America. It's a synthetic and hollow rebellion, based on artificial premises, ulterior motives and with no clear path to anything better. The answer is supposed to be what - something that emerges magically from the ether, once the power structure is dismantled?What a bunch of dangerous, demonstrably false and poorly aged hogwash. The Left uses you and then spits you out. They've done it to women, to Jews, to the working class, to any dissident voice within the ranks, here and everywhere else where they got a toe hold. They have no loyalty to anything but power. The whole experience and painfully incremental learning of thousands of years of human civilization are just to be washed away and replaced by whatever currently infatuates the chattering class. Great article Brad. I'm currently a Junior at the College and can certainly testify to a lot of what you wrote about. It's quite a shame that it has reached this point. I believe that many students, myself included, wish that Harvard would get out of the culture wars and focus on their jobs as educators. Their ideological warfare has gotten to the point where job opportunities are being actively withheld. I hope that donors, alumni, and faculty can continue to push back and advocate for a sensible administration. Thank you for your work in that effort.

Read your bit about Harvard. Not many schools are the same. GenZ has had some big effect on traditional institutions of higher learning. The main effect on Harvard may be 'woke benefactors' who will bitch and hold off funding for a year or so. Students love this contrarian stuff. Profs don't give a s-t. Harvard is only an example for elite professors, physicians who want to teach and some lawyers.
I studied history as an undergraduate not at an Ivy but at SUNY Albany graduation 1984-88. I loved every class I took and actually took more than needed for the major. My professors were all great teachers and scholars who resemble you and the professor described here (With the exception of one who was a Marxist but who STILL ran a classroom of free and open inquiry). I am sickened by what has become of higher education.
